Microbicide gel breakthrough a victory for women and nurses
"For me, these women are champions for agreeing to use an unknown product. It needs to be investigated further to verify the results, but the women are part of the breakthrough," says Mukelisiwe Mlotshwa, the research nurse and team leader for clinical procedures of the CAPRISA 004 microbicide gel which was released by the Centre for AIDS Programme of Reseach in South Africa (CAPRISA) at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria on 20 July. SA Minister of Health pays tribute to nurses
On International Nurses Day on 12 May, the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, paid tribute to South Africa's nurses, and acknowledged the many challenges they face in performing their daily duties.
HSRC and Nelson Mandela University to collaborate on social aspects of HIV/AIDS
PORT ELIZABETH - The Human Sciences Research Council and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to research on the social aspects of HIV/AIDS here today.The agreement entails co-publishing the quarterly Journal of the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS (SAHARA J) and co-hosting the biennial Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA) conference for the next five years. SAHARA is a network of African researchers on the social and behavioural aspects of HIV/AIDS. The secretariat of SAHARA is hosted by the HSRC.

Dept of Education awards first ever clinical training grants for nursing
In a historic move for nursing in South Africa, the Department of Education has awarded clinical training grants totalling R124-million which will benefit 4000 nursing students for their first degree. The grants are awarded over two years (2010-2011; 211-2012) to universities and universities of technology throughout South Africa, and represent 18% of the total clinical training grant of R680-million.
