The TUT project aims to develop, implement and benchmark a Nursing Community of Practice (NCoP) Model in a low-income housing area in Soshanguve, with the ultimate goal of leading the transformation of nursing education in South Africa.

The TUT has established seven key objectives to be pursued during the course of this project, which are :

  • To develop an overarching NCoP around five specific NCoPs in each of the following areas: (1) mother and well-baby; (2) early childhood intervention; (3) lifestyle diseases; (4) cancer; and (5) palliative care;
  • To comply with the accreditation criteria of the Gauteng Department of Health (DOH) for Community Health Centres (CHCs) at the Soshanguve site;
  • To create appropriate community-based learning opportunities for undergraduate students;
  • To create appropriate community-based learning opportunities for postgraduate students;
  • To facilitate nursing research and scholarship;
  • To build capacity for the future needs of the SON; and to benchmark the overarching NCoP as a nursing education model for utilisation by other nursing education institutions nationally and internationally

The most significant achievements and impacts:

  • The greater Nursing Community of Practice (NCoP) as a strategy to facilitate nursing education and scholarship was made accessible through five individual NCoPs (mobile clinics)
  • The greater NCoP received accreditation as a Community Health Centre from the Gauteng Department of Health with a score of 96.4%.
  • Nursing education and scholarship at the NCoP is thriving asevidenced throughnew additional undergraduate learning opportunities.
  • Specialized health care is delivered to the population of Soshanguve Extensions 12 and 13 who would otherwise not have had access to the health services. These low resource communities live in semi-formal settlements and current research done by NCoP postgraduate scholarship students reflects that 80% of the population in these communities live below the international poverty level of 2US$ per day.
  • The NCoP website is fully operational since January 2011 with a total number of 12,905 hits
