Welcome To UNEDSA
(University – Based Nursing Education South Africa)
VISION
UNEDSA’s vision is to produce a cadre of empowered nurse academics which will lead nursing as a discipline to be at the forefront of research, clinical practice and educational activities in universities.
MISSION
The mission of the UNEDSA Programme is to improve the health of South Africans by transforming nursing scholarship in university schools of nursing. This mission statement highlights the central role that professional nurses, as the backbone of the nation’s healthcare system, play in health care.
The slogan of the Programme is “Lighting the Fire for Nursing in SA”. It is symbolised by the flames in the logo. The use of the flame and light in nursing symbolism goes back to the days of Florence Nightingale, the “lady with the lamp” at Scutari Hospital during the Crimean War. To this day, newly qualified nurses have a “lamp lighting” ceremony at which they take the professional nurses’ pledge of service.
The UNEDSA Programme logo takes the important element of the flame from the lamp and places it in a contemporary format. Fire is a symbol of warmth, light and transformation and thus the UNEDSA flame is seen to been lighting the fire of transformation in higher nursing education. |
